Much has been written about the future of YMCAs like ours and endowments relative to the future.

What is an endowment? In simple language, an endowment is like a savings account that draws interest, and the interest is valuable for use in the operational budget of our YMCA. The money deposited in the endowment is never used, only the interest. Therefore, the larger the endowment, the more interest (money) we will have to operate the YMCA.

How are endowments accumulated? About 85 percent of all endowments are built through the bequests. Individuals, in their wills or insurance leave the YMCA money to be placed in the endowment fund for the betterment of long life of the YMCA. The other 15 percent comes from outright gifts of cash or real property.

The Lima Family YMCA continues to encourage members and friends to remember the YMCA. With today’s tax structure, it is probable that you can help yourself, your family and the YMCA by acting now to include the YMCA in your will, insurance or other “planned giving” arrangements. We are aware that there are others who are considering assisting us but who simply have not identified themselves. We hope that these friends would notify the YMCA of their commitment, become members of the Heritage Club, and be gratefully recognized for their beneficence.
