Partnering with Lima Memorial Health System (LMHS), the Y launched in June a special exercise program modeled after one designed by Dr. Terry Steffen, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Steffen is working with the Wisconsin Parkinson’s Association to establish exercise programs specifically designed for persons with Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Steffen is conducting research that measures the impact of specialized exercise routines on balance, coordination and movement. This exercise program is more than about simply being physically active – it’s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. It is a support program designed for people with Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.
Participants receive an assessment prior to beginning the program by physical therapy staff from Lima Memorial Hospital. This helps Y staff and physical therapists to design an exercise regimen specifically for each individual.
Josh Unterbrink, Health & Wellness Director at the Y states, “Exercise and social support systems have proven to play a vital role in maintaining quality of life for persons with Parkinson’s disease.”
Tricia Yahl, DPT, Clinical Manager of LMHS Wellness Center at the YMCA said, “Strength training, stretching, range of motion exercises, treadmill use and other forms of physical activity can all help a Parkinson’s patient maintain mobility, dexterity and balance.”
