Twenty-six miles across the sea from Los Angles, California’s fables Island of Santa Catalina is radiant with legend and history. From the Big Bands to the magnificent steamship S.S. Catalina, the Isle of Romance holds a special place in the lore of the Golden State. But few icons are more evocative of Catalina’s history than the seaplanes and classic airliners like the Douglas DC-3 that have roared through the skies above the Island for nearly a century. The first feature-length documentary tells the story of this fascinating era in California’s history Wings Across the Channel: Catalina Island’s Aviation history is the story of Catalina and its unique partnership with aviation. Nowhere else in America has aviation played such a romantic and colorful role in the lives of the average person than here on the Island. Viewers are taken on hair-raising flights in opencockpit Curtiss Seagulls, Gossamer Sikorsky S-38s and rare Douglas Dolphins—the striking twin-engine amphibian designed specifically for Catalina Island by aerospace legend Donald Douglas.
